"I love you."

“Mommy, I'm sorry.” “Mommy, I love you.”

I love you.

I Love you more than

you'll ever know

Hi Kato Akira Kaato,
Such a great name!

How's it going?
...glad you enjoyed "The Birdcage".

"Birdcage"

(December 30, 2011)

Like you, the first time I saw it, I almost laughed myself to death.
It was SO funny and it's so West-End Vancouver, don't you think?
How hilarious!

I couldn't access your response to the movie, but I'm sure it was fun as well.
The guys who make these movies must be geniuses, I'm sure.
My boyfriend and I are going to see "The Artist" tomorrow.

A critic says, it should have us tap-dancing out of the theatre.
All the reviews I've seen are positive, but I'm still not convinced a movie with NO dialogue can be that great.
Time will tell, as they say.

...hope you're doing well, staying out trouble, and meeting lots of wonderful, sensual and mysterious women!

Love, Diane ~

Subj:Daine, do you remeber

Hello, Diane,

Have you ever heard of this name---Chris McCandless?

The young man threw away his real name and his background, then called himself Alexander Supertramp, and walked into the wilderness.
Unfortunately, he was found dead in August, 1992.
This incident made a sensational news at the time.
Now, you might recall it.

Well, I read the book "Into the Wild" about the above incident and viewed the DVD with the same title.
Since it has something to do with you and me,
I've just written a story. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...

I hope you'll enjoy reading it.

Your truly wild Taliesin,

story line!

Hi Kato,

Very inspiring .. thanks!
I do vaguely recall this story, and the trailer was fascinating.
I must reserve the DVD one day soon.

I just love Sean Penn as an actor and can only imagine that he's equally professional as a director.
What an interesting story line!

Tales of adventure and freedom are always interesting.
He's just like you, Kato, a world traveller.

How are you doing?
...hope you're getting lots of exercise and socialization as well as your computer work ... although this time of year does encourage more indoor activities, I know.
Have you seen much of that mysterious lady lately?

Gotta run,

Love, Diane ~

Kato, have you seen much of that mysterious lady lately?

Yes, I have.

So, you told her, she didn't have to sit at the online computer in order to see her DVD, didn't you?

No, I didn't.

Why not?

'Cause she yawned several times and then started nodding as soon as she inserted her DVD into the drive. I didn't want to disturb her peaceful sleep.

Don't tell me such a fib, Kato.

I'm not joking, not even jesting.

Are you saying, she sank into a doze whenever she viewed her DVD?

That's right. I always wonder what she is doing with her DVD, which seems to poroduce a pleasant lullaby. With a pair of earpieces over her head she always nods comfortably while listening to her favorite lullaby DVD.

Well...probably, she slipped into a romantic dream.

Anyway, how did you like "The Artist"?

The Artist

The Artist is a 2011 French romance film directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.
The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies.
Much of the film itself is silent; it is shot in black-and-white, and has received wide praise from critics and many accolades.
Dujardin won the Best Actor Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the film premiered.
The film has six Golden Globe nominations, the most of 2011.

Plot

Swashbuckling silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) attends the premiere of his latest film A Russian Affair.
Outside the theater, Valentin is posing for pictures for the paparazzi when a woman, Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), admiring Valentin while lost in a sea of adoring fans, drops her purse.
She bends down to get it, but is accidentally pushed into Valentin.
She ends up photographed, and the next day, she is on the front page of Variety with the headline "Who's That Girl?".

Later, Miller auditions as a dancer and is spotted by Valentin.
He insists she have a bit in his new film, despite objections from the studio boss, Al Zimmer (John Goodman).
Peppy slowly rises in the industry, her roles growing larger and larger.

Two years later, Zimmer announces the end of production of silent films, but Valentin insists that sound is just a fad.
When Zimmer unloads all his silent stars, George decides to produce and direct his own silent film, financing it himself.
It opens on the same day as Miller's new sound film, and Valentin is ruined.
His wife, Doris (Penelope Ann Miller), kicks him out, and he moves into an apartment with his valet, Clifton (James Cromwell).
Miller goes on to become a major Hollywood star.

Later, Valentin fires Clifton and sells off all his effects.
Desperate and drunk, Valentin starts a fire in his home.
His dog gets help and he awakes in a bed in Miller's house.
Clifton is now working for Miller.
Miller insists that Valentin co-stars in her next film, or she will quit Zimmer's studio.
After Valentin learns that Miller had purchased all of his auctioned effects, he has a nervous breakdown and returns to his burnt-out apartment.
Miller arrives, panicked, as Valentin is attempting suicide.
Peppy and George reconcile, and remembering that he is a superb dancer, she convinces Zimmer to let them make a musical together, and the picture ends with the implication that Valentin will return to fame again.

In the final shot, the sound finally comes in as the film starts rolling.
Afterwards, Zimmer calls 'Cut! Perfect. Beautiful. Could you give me one more?'.
Valentin, in his first audible line, replies in a clearly French accent, "With pleasure", revealing the reason he refused to speak on camera.

Production

Director Michel Hazanavicius had been fantasizing about making a silent film for many years, both because many filmmakers he admires emerged in the silent era, and because of the image-driven nature of the format.
According to Hazanavicius his wish to make a silent film was at first not taken seriously, but after the financial success of his spy-film pastiches OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in Rio, producers started to express interest.
The forming of the film's narrative started with Hazanavicius' desire to work again with actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, Hazanivicius's wife, who had starred in the OSS 117 films.
Hazanavicius chose the form of the melodrama, mostly because he thought many of the films from the silent era which have aged best are melodramas.
He did extensive research about 1920s Hollywood, and studied silent films to find the right techniques to make the story comprehensible without having to use too many intertitles.
The screenplay took four months to write.

The film was produced by La Petite Reine and ARP Sélection for 13.47 million euro, including co-production support from Studio 37 and France 3 Cinéma, and pre-sales investment from Canal+ and CinéCinéma.
Both the cast and crew were mixed French and American.

Filming took place during seven weeks on location in Los Angeles.
Throughout the shoot Hazanavicius played music from classic Hollywood films while the actors performed.

Only one song (sung, with lyrics) is used in the soundtrack, "Pennies from Heaven," sung by Rose "Chi-Chi" Murphy (uncredited).

As you know, I read quite a few reviews, which were mostly positive, but I wasn't convinced. A movie with NO dialogue cannot be that great.

So, you were disappointed, weren't you?

No, not quite... Actually, I liked the movie because the performances of both Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo were elegant and delightful, but I must say that, halfway through, the movie became quite slow with no dialogues. I almost dropped into a dead sleep like the mysterious lady at Joe Fortes Library.

I agree with you, Diane.

Kato, did you see the movie?

Oh, no, but I saw the trailer. Besides, I also read quite a few reviews. As you told, most of the reviews are favorable, but some say that making a silent film at present isn't a serious endeavour. I got the same gut feeling as you had, Diane, when I read your mail.

A movie with NO dialogue cannot be that great.

That's right. We're living in the days of talkies so that our minds always create so many dialogues in the brain even if we see a silent movie. Therefore, as you told, the silent movie becomes quite slow with no dialogues. Whenever I see a silent movie, I stop viewing within the first ten minutes 'cause I cannot stand the sugguishness anymore. My mind feels the movie so dull that my brain goes to sleep.

Silent movies are so dull, aren't they?

You're telling me, Diane. But there are two exceptions?

Oh...? What is it?

Ben-Hur of 1925.

Ben-Hur of 1925

This silent movie was made with almost 4 million dollars at the time---the most expensive silent film ever made, and became a mega spectacle with 120,000 extras. The film of the chariot-race scene became 60 kilometer long so that it was shortened to 229 meter by edit. I borrowed the DVD from Joe Fortes Library and enjoyed it immensely. Diane, you're gonna love it.

What makes you think so?

Well..., unlike Ben-hur 0f 1959, the silent version is like a Christmas movie.

Ben-Hur of 1959

Tell me about it.

The birth of Christ was filmed in the silent version, and three wise men watched the sparkling star fall from the sky. You can see Mother of God as well. So, you'll be able to show it to the kids in your church the next X'mas.

Is that all?

Oh, no...the current prints of the 1925 version are from the Turner-supervised restoration, which includes the color tints and Technicolor sections, set to resemble the original theatrical release. There is an addition of a newly recorded stereo orchestral soundtrack by Carl Davis with the London Philharmonic Orchestra that was originally recorded for a Thames Television screening of the movie.

Where can I find it?

It can be found at Joe Fortes Library. You'll find the DVD complete with the Technicolor segments---the four-disc collector's edition of the 1959 version starring Charlton Heston.

I can hardly wait to see the silent version. By the way, what is the other exception?

A good and timely question, Diane! It is called "Double suicide of Sonezaki."

Wow! What a deadly and shocking title! I don't think I've ever heard of that.

It's a Japanese film made in 1978.

Double Suicide of Sonezaki

(Opening Scene)

This isn't a silent movie, is it?

No, it isn't. The silent version is actually a Japanese puppet show.

What is so fascinating about this puppet show?

You see, puppets don't talk, but their movements are elegant, subtle, and delicate. Those puppeteers are recognized as "human-treasure" in Japan. Manipulated and controlled by those experts, the movements of those puppets are actually more sophisticated than human actors.

Yes, I can tell.

Can you?

But "Double suicide" is againt my religion.

I know...I know...I don't mean that you should accept double suicide. I just wanna tell you that Michel Hazanavicius, the director of "The Artist," might as well perform the drama as a French puppet show.

【Himiko's Monologue】

Wow! ... I'm glad Renge didn't commit suicide.
As you know, you don't have to feel lonely because everybody is born alone and dies alone.

The thing is, how to meet a better half.
Unfortunately, I haven't met my better half so far, although I met so many unromantic morons.

Come to think of it, I've never met my "Romeo"---a decent man in my life.
How come I'm always a loner?
I wish I could meet a nice gentleman at the library in my town as Diane met Kato.
Well, they say, there is a way where there is a will.

I hope Kato will write another interesting article.
So please come back to see me.

Have a nice day!
Bye bye ...

Hi, I'm June Adames.

The film "The Artist" premiered on 15 May in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

It was initially announced as an out-of-competition entry, but was moved to the competition a week before the festival opened.

The Weinstein Company bought the distribution rights for the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

The film was released in the United States on 25 November 2011.

Ninety-seven percent of critics have given the film a positive review based on 133 reviews, with an average score of 8.7/10, making the film a "Certified Fresh" on the website's rating system.

Mark Adams of Screen Daily called the film "a real pleasure" propelled elegantly forward by delightful performances from Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.

He added however: "The film does feel a little sluggish towards the end of the first third as the music is a little repetitive and the intertitles are infrequent, but Hazanavicius manages to give the film a real sense of charm and warmth."

Well...if you've got some time, why don't you see the movie and judge it yourself?

"Madame Riviera and Burger"

(July 26, 2011)

I've read the above article.
Your article is excellent as usual.
I did remember that you lived in Yellowknife some years ago.

Many years ago, I too lived for six months or so in the north, Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Actually, I worked for a mining company in a small town called Faro (Anvil Mines at the time) as secretary to the President.
I was given my own apartment (most of the staff had to live in bunk houses) and a huge salary compared with what I would receive in Vancouver.
So I was thrilled about that.
I didn't want to feel totally isolated, though, so I asked whether I could eat with the others in the cookhouse and they obliged.

Thank God.
It was fun and much easier than doing my own cooking and making do with the limited selection in the local store.
The cook took a special liking to me and every day he would give me extra rations of cookies and cakes.

Pretty soon I realized that if I took advantage of these favours I would end up being a roly-poly.

so I would take them and then give them away.
Lotsa fun.

I do remember a really cute Japanese gal who worked up there telling me she had already gained 25 lbs in one year, and it showed.

It was all the lesson I needed, thankfully.

Le Crueset cookware is definitely famous.
A friend of mine in Kerrisdale has some and he said they're very, very expensive but worth every penny.

He has one pot that he uses almost daily and has for years and it has proved to be the best pot he's every cooked with and worked with---sturdy, reliable, easy to work with.
So I guess it's worth the big bucks, true?!

Vancouver is pretty good, but not paradise I'd say.
The weather's too crummy half the time, or more than half the time actually, Which is why my brother left Canada for France.
He could no longer stand the cold weather.
Certainly, I do miss him.

As a matter of fact, I've found an interesting joke:

You see, Kato, we don't have many sunny days in Vancouver!
Anyway, I enjoyed reading your article.
Thanks again for all this.

Love, Diane ~

(July 30, 2011)

Kato, how come you've brought up my old mail?

A good question...I've read the book "Into the Wild" written by Jon Krakauer, then viewed the DVD in the library.

Into the Wild (Trailer)

Chris McCandless

a.k.a Alexander Supertramp

The above book is a non-fiction written based on the real story.

What kind of story?

Well...it's a story of adventure and self-search journey into the wilderness.

...sound quite interesting.

I thought you would say that.

What makes you think so?

...'cause you went up north to Faro in the wilderness.

Faro is a small town, but far from wilderness, I suppose. I went up there for my career.

I know, but if you hate wilderness and adventure, I don't think you went up north in the first place.

You're right on, Kato. Anyway, what impressed you so much.

The story is about Chris McCandless---a young man who threw away his real name and his background, then called himself Alexander Supertramp.

So he was a super tramp, wasn't he?

You're telling me, Diane. He graduated from college in 1990 and told his parents that he might as well go to Harvard Law School---simply to make his parents happy. Although he loved his parents, he sank into a trauma when he came to know that his mother gave birth to him while his father was married to another woman.

So, he was legally born as a bastard, wasn't he?

That's right.

Is this the reason he stepped into the wild as Alexander Supertramp?

I would say so. He threw away his identity, donated his all the money ($24,000) to a charity organization, then took up another identity as Alexander Supertramp, and stepped into a self-search adventure penniless.

Unfortunately, he was found dead in August, 1992.

What happened to him?

Nobody knows for sure, but the book suggested he ate some kind of poisonous plant. So did the movie.

I think I heard the news of his death in 1992.

So did I, and I thought that the yound man was a careless hitch-hiker, and forgot about the incident soon afterwards. Then I happened to read the book. As soon as I read the book, the incident came back to my mind. At the end of the bood written in 1996, the Japanese translator told that the movie was to be made and shown in 2006 or 2007. So I borrowed the DVD and viewed it.

Who directed the movie?

Sean Penn.

I thought he was an actor.

Yes, he was and still is. He is now a hyphnated director---actor-come-director.

He does look older, doesn't he?

Well...everybody is getting old day by day, you know.

You're telling me, Kato. How come you are so movivated to view the movie?

Well... first of all, his footsteps crossed yours and mine...sort of, when you and I were young, staying up north.

I see. But your place in Yellowknife was far from his route, wasn't it?

You're right on, but Yellowknife is much closer to his final camp site than my hometown in Japan. Besides, I read a depressed young woman's desperate desire---something like a suicide note.

Anxiety, frustration,

and loneliness

I'd rather die.

I've got a doner card.

So, Kato, you thought Chris McCandless went into the wild to commit suicide, didn't you?

That's right. I really wanted to know why he went up into the north.

By the way, Kato, did you reply to her suicide note?

Yes, I did.

No kidding!

I'm dead serious. Those notes and replies were all in my blog.

My dear Renge,

If you say lonely, imagine yourself in the northen wilderness.

The temperature goes down to 42 degree below.

There is nobody around in the wilderness.

You could see the mysterious northern lights.

If you say lonely in the biggest city in Japan,

what would a soul in the wilderness say?

I lived in Yellowknife for nearly two years.

Every time I saw northern lights alone,

I felt somewhat lonely.

Whenever I walked from my place for five minutes,

the wilderness invited me into a desolate land.

Into desolation rather than loneliness.

When I walked into desolation, I felt I was on my own---free from all social shackles.

In any case, everyone lives alone.

You were born alone, and will die alone after all.

Why don't you come to see the northern lights?

The picture above looks tinted yellow.

The real ones shine like an oxidized silver curtain.

Mystical and fantastic!

I felt as if I would be sucked up into the eternal silver world.

Then I came out to Vancouver---a face-to-face world.

My dear Renge, if you don't like lonliness,

talk to somebody---your neighbor, your work buddy, or anyone.

If nobody, then talk to me. //\/i/i(^Д^)/

When you stop talking, you increasingly become lonely.

In any case, don't think too deeply.

The sun always comes up after the night.

From time to time, I come to your blog.

Until then, goodbye.

(^Д^) ha, ha, ha, ha...

Hi, I'm June Adames.

Chris McCandless grew up in suburban Annandale, Virginia.

After graduating in 1990 with high grades from Emory University, McCandless ceased communicating with his family, gave away his college fund of $24,000 to Oxfam---a charity organization.

He then began traveling, later abandoning his car.

In April 1992, McCandless hitch-hiked to the Stampede Trail in Alaska.

There, McCandless headed down the snow-covered trail to begin an odyssey with only 10 pounds of rice, a .22 caliber rifle, several boxes of rifle rounds, a camera, and a small selection of reading material, including a field guide to the region's edible plants.

His backpack was later found to contain his wallet, containing multiple forms of identification, his social security card, $300, and library cards.

A map of the area was also found in his backpack.

He declined an acquaintance's offer to buy him sturdier clothing and better supplies.

After surviving more than 100 days, he is thought to have died on August 18, 1992.

Hi Kato,
How's it going with you?

I read your article.

"Auntie Sleepie"

(December 13, 2011)

Fascinating information in the above article!
I actually think I know the mysterious and inspirational lady you're talking about.
She looks very much like the photo you displayed and she comes across as intelligent but disturbed at the same time.
Something must have happened to her that affected her more rational behaviour, or at least that's how it seems.

I certainly know about Kurosawa as he's been famous and very popular here in Canada now for some time.
The movie "Throne of Blood" looks a bit too gory for me, though.

More of a man's film, I'd say.
Interesting story, for sure.

Are you keeping busy ... too busy sometimes?
My boyfriend and I went to the Playhouse Theatre on Saturday night and saw a hilarious play "La Cage aux Folles."

I had seen the movie years ago and then there was remake apparently with Robin Williams.

The Birdcage (1996)

(Movie Trailer)

The movie was better, but the play was still quite marvellous.
Preparing now for Christmas.
Maybe I'll get to Joe Fortes before that time. Hopefully.

Gotta run,

Hi Diane,

I'm glad to know that you've been happily preparing for the big event---X'mas!
Well..., I'm not a Christian, so X'mas is not such a big event in my life.
However, watching X'mas trees always makes me happy and puts me into a festival mood.

Your big crook reminded me of James Herriot's sheep story, in which a dying sheep is miraculously saved simply because she has been sent into a long sleep with a drug so that she couldn't feel pain at all.
Pain and fear would give anyone a bad effect.
That's what James Herriot said in the story.
Well, at least, your big crook gave me a bit of laugh, which made me happy. :)

By the way, the mysterious woman showed up in the afternoon with a DVD today.
She always puzzles me.
What is she doing?
She doesn't have to sit at the online computer at all if she wants to view DVDs.
An offline computer will do.
How come she always sits at the online computer at the same time?
Some day, I might as well ask ker.

Sylvie had appeared 20 minutes earlier than you did.
You just missed her.
As usual, she seemed happy and satisfied with herself. :) he, he, he, he, he,...

Well, I've just written a story about the "Titanic" movie and my own Titanic-like romance.
Please click the following link:

I hope you'll enjoy reading it.

Your truly romantic Taliesin,

Subj:Hi, Kato...

Please come to see the play.

Hi, Kato.
Yes, it's a lovely crook isn't it?
I'll have to send you some photos of the cast when we're in full regalia.
I've got an awesome shepherd's outfit which I pretty well put together myself, and the rest of the group are really fun and committed to the play.
Of course, if I had got to be one of the three Kings it'd be an even better costume with more glitter and such, but what's a girl to do.
You've got to dress for the role you've got.

As it turns out, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is really sick and I've been substituting for her as well as playing my simple role as a shepherd, so it may turn out I get to do both roles on Christmas Eve.
Such fun I haven't had since grade school, really!
It's just filled me with such happiness.

We'll perform the play at 5 PM on Dec. 24th.
Kato, come to my church & see for yourself, just for fun, why don't you?

By the way, I'm so fascinated with this mysterious lady.
You really should approach her and get to know her, if only to explain to her she can watch her DVD's without booking time on the computer.
She'd probably bless you for this.
Let me know, okay?

Thanks for this information.
I've not got time right now but SOON I'll peruse it.

Love & Blessings,

Diane ~

Kato, how come you didn't come to my church to see the play?

It was down-pouring. Too wet to go out.

I don't think so. It was drizzling, but not definitely down-pouring. You should've come to see the play.

Anyway, I had a good laugh when you showed up at Joe Fortes Library with that giant crook. That was more than enough for me. :) He, he, he, he, he,...

Don't be silly, Kato...I didn't show up like that.

In any case, I could easily imagine how the play would go. So instead, I was looking for some funny X'mas video clips for a X'mas article.

You're not dependable. You don't show up or you come too late...always like that.

Talking of the play, Diane, you went to the Playhouse Theatre to see "La Cage aux Folles," didn't you?

Yes, I did. Did you, Kato?

No, I didn't...but I viewed the "Birdcage" DVD, which you mentioned in the mail.

Oh, did you? I think the movie is better, but the play is still quite marvellous.

La Cage aux Folles

It is a musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman.
Based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, it focuses on a gay couple: Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his romantic partner and star attraction, and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges's son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée's ultra-conservative parents to meet them.

The original 1983 Broadway production received nine nominations for Tony Awards and won six, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
The success of the musical spawned a West End production and several international runs.
The 2004 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival, the 2008 London revival garnered the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
The 2010 Broadway revival was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
La Cage aux Folles is the only musical which has won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical twice and the only show that has won a Best Production Tony Award (Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical) for each of its Broadway productions.
A National Tour, based on the 2010 revival, will begin in October 2011 with George Hamilton as Georges and Christopher Sieber as Albin.

Synopsis

Georges, the master of ceremonies, welcomes the audience to his St. Tropez drag nightclub, "La Cage aux Folles".
The chorus line known as Les Cagelles appear and introduce themselves to the audience.
Georges and his "wife", Albin, have lived happily together for many years in an apartment above La Cage with their black "maid" Jacob.
Albin is a drag queen and the star performer of La Cage aux Folles under the alias of "Zaza".

As Albin prepares to perform, Georges' 24-year-old son Jean-Michel (the offspring of a confused, youthful liaison with a woman named Sybil) arrives home with the news that he is engaged to Anne Dindon.
Georges is reluctant to approve of Jean-Michel's engagement, but Jean-Michel assures his father that he is in love with Anne.
Unfortunately, her father is head of the "Tradition, Family and Morality Party", whose stated goal is to close the local drag clubs.
Anne's parents want to meet their daughter's future in-laws.
Jean-Michel has lied to his fiancée, describing Georges as a retired diplomat, and he pleads with Georges to tell Albin to absent himself (and his flamboyantly gay behaviors) for the visit.

Before Georges can break the news to him, Albin suggests that they hurry back to La Cage to make it in time for the next show.
They arrive in time and Albin takes the stage once more as Zaza.
While Albin is performing, Georges and Jean-Michel quickly redecorate the house.

Georges finally tells Albin of Jean-Michel's plan and expects Albin to explode with fury, but he remains silent.
Albin then re-joins Les Cagelles onstage and tells them to leave.
He then begins to sing alone in defiance of Jean-Michel, stating that he is proud of who he is and refuses to change for anyone.
He angrily throws his wig at Georges and departs in a huff.

The next morning, Georges finds Albin after his abrupt departure and apologizes.
He then suggests to Albin that he dress up for dinner as macho "Uncle Al".
Albin is still upset, but reluctantly agrees to act like a heterosexual for Jean-Michel.
Back at the chastely redesigned apartment, Georges shows "Uncle Al" to Jean-Michel.
Jean-Michel doesn't like the idea and expresses his dislike for Albin's lifestyle.
Georges angrily reminds Jean-Michel of how good of a "mother" Albin has been to him.
They then receive a telegram that Jean-Michel's mother Sybil is not coming and Anne's parents arrive.

Hoping to save the day, Albin appears as Jean-Michel's buxom, forty-year-old mother, in pearls and sensible shoes.
The nervous Jacob burns the dinner, so a trip to a local restaurant, "Chez Jacqueline", belonging to an old friend of Albin and Georges, is quickly arranged.
No one has told Jacqueline of the situation, and she asks Albin (as Zaza) for a song, to which he hesitantly agrees.
Everyone in the restaurant begins to take part in the song, causing Albin to yield to the frenzy of performance and tear off his wig at the song's climax, revealing his true identity.

Back at the apartment, the Dindons plead with their daughter to abandon her fiancé, for they are appalled by his homosexual parents, but she is in love with Jean-Michel and refuses to leave him.
Jean-Michel, deeply ashamed of the way he has treated Albin, asks his forgiveness, which is lovingly granted.
The Dindons prepare to depart, but their way is blocked by Jacqueline, who has arrived with the press, ready to photograph these notorious anti-homosexual activists with Zaza.
Georges and Albin have a proposal: If Anne and Jean-Michel may marry, Georges will help the Dindons escape through La Cage aux Folles next door.
The Dindons do so, dressed in drag as members of the nightclub's revue, and all ends well.

Was the playhouse packed?

Oh, yes, it was with a lot of people. We really enjoyed the play. How about you, Kato?

I didn't see the play, but the "Birdcage" is quite an amusing movie. Nathan Lane, who played as Albert, is a funny guy---actually, the funniest homosexual I've ever seen in my life.

Funniest? In what way?

Well..., he was eating at the table with Robin Williams. He picked up some slimy stuff with a fork, but couldn't manage to hold it, and dropped it. In doing so, he overreacted in such a hilarious way that I laughted to death. He was really a drag queen in the true sense.

I cannot recall such a funny scene.

Anyway, if someone with homophobia see the movie, he or she might change his way of thinking about homosexuality.

Kato, are you a homosexual?

Diane, are you trying to insult me?

Oh, no, I'm quite serious and curious.

Do I look like a drag queen?

Oh, no, you don't. But I've noticed that a wildest-looking man sometimes turns out to be a homosexual.

I'm not against homosexuality, but acting like a drag queen is the last thing I want to do.

You know, Kato, there are quite a few anti-gay activists in Vancouver.

I know that. So the Vancouver School Board is taking a anti-homophobia policy, using film and video to engage youth and educators on issues related to homophobia.

How do you know?

I saw the sign board the other day.

Where did you find it?

Of course, in Vancouver. Look at the map in the background. Don't ask me such a foolish question.

So the school board is providing anti-homophobia programs, isn't it?

I suppose so. If I was one of the school trustees, I would propose that each student should see "The Birdcage" so that all the students would laugh off homophobia. What would you say, Diane?

Maybe a good idea. I agree with you.

【Himiko's Monologue】

Wow! ... What a funny drag queen!
As you know, a drag queen is a man who dresses, and usually acts, like a caricature woman often for the purpose of entertaining.
There are many kinds of drag artists and they vary greatly, from professionals who have starred in films to people who just try it once.
Drag queens also vary by class and culture and can vary even within the same city.
Although many drag queens are gay men, there are drag artists of all genders and sexualities who do drag for various reasons or purposes.
Women who dress like men for the same purpose are known as drag kings.

I hope Kato will write another interesting article.
So please come back to see me.

Have a nice day!
Bye bye ...

Hi, I'm June Adames.

I saw "The Birdcage" too.

It was indeed hilarious.

The Birdcage met with mixed reviews ranging from praise to condemnation in both the mainstream press and the gay press for the portrayals of its gay characters.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) praised the film for "going beyond the stereotypes to see the character's depth and humanity."

The Birdcage opened on March 8, 1996 and grossed 18 million dollars in its opening weekend, topping the box office.

By the end of its 14-week run, the film had grossed 124 million dollars domestically and 61 million internationally, coming down to 185 million worldwide.

So it became quite a popular movie.

If you happen to visit a library in your neighborhood, you might as well borrow the "Birdcage" DVD and view it.

I'm pretty sure you'll laugh to death.

Titanic @ Sendai

Titanic @ Sendai

I borrowed the "Titanic" DVD from the Joe Fortes Library a week ago and viewed it. Oh!...that was a fantastic film!---more than three-hour long, yet I viewed it without an intermission!

Did you? But it was made in 1997, wasn't it?

Yes, it was---14 years ago. For some reason, I didn't see it when it was first released.

Do you know, Kato, the 3-D version of "Titanic" will be released in the next year.

Why released in 2012?

Remember! That sinking disaster took place in 1912.

Oh,... I see---The next year is its hundredth anniversary, isn't it?

Yes, it is.

Diane, did you see it back in 1997?

Yes, of course, I did...it was reportedly a mega film that took $200 million---the most expensive movie ever made in the history, they said. Besides, I heard, it was a state-of-the-art fantastic movie. So I could hardly wait, and stood in a long waiting line to get a ticket.

Yeah, I've heard of it. The film earned more than a billion dollars worldwide, and set a record. Although I didn't pay a cent, it was such a spectacle movie of such magnitude that it's hard to imagine feeling you didn't get your time and money's worth. I really enjoyed the movie myself.

Oh, did you?

The first part is kinda eerie with underwater images of the Titanic's remains resting beneath the Atlantic since its close encounter with an iceberg in 1912. When I first saw this part, I thought that I was viewing a different documentary movie, and wondered if I should return it.

You know, Kato, the director---James Cameron---is a underwater nerd who filmed the remains by himself. He was so preoccupied with the Titanic. That preoccupation was the motive to make the film in the first place.

Oh, was it?

Before filming the Titanic movie, he took part in the salvage expedition.

I see...Did James Cameron find that fabulous blue diamond?

That diamond didn't exist in the first place, neither did the romance between Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

No kidding!

James Cameron created a "Romeo and Juliet" story on the Titanic so that he thought the movie would attract a great number of viewers and could get enough funding for making the movie from film companies.

I thought the movie was filmed based on the historical facts.

Yes, it's true in part, but half the characters in the movie are fictional figures created by James Cameron.

Diane, how do you know?

'Cause I've read about the background story---as much as possible on the Net.

Have you?...so, you're saying that the "Romeo and Juliet" story on the Titanic didn't actually happen at all, aren't you?

No, not at all.

Well..., it's such a letdown, isn't it?

Kato, did you genuinely believe that the romance actually took place on the Titanic?

Yes, I did...that romance is the core of the whole movie, isn't it?

Yes, it is, but that romance is a fiction. By the way, Kato, are you talking about another Titanic ship made in Sendai---your second home town in Japan?

Oh, no. There is no Titanic made in Japan as far as I know.

Then, how come you've picked up "Titanic @ Sendai" as a title.

A good question, Diane...well, as you know, the core of the romance goes like this:

Distraught by her engagement to Cal Hockley---the wealthy yet caddish and bullish man, Rose considers suicide by jumping off the ship's stern.
A drifter and artist named Jack Dawson stops her.
Discovered with Jack on the stern, Rose tells Cal that she was looking over the ship's edge in curiosity and that Jack saved her from falling.
At Rose's insistence, Cal invites Jack to dinner the following night to show his appreciation.
Jack and Rose develop a tentative friendship, though Cal and Ruth are wary of the young third-class man.
Following the first-class dinner that night, Rose secretly joins Jack at a party in the ship's third-class quarter.
The couple enjoyed the party to their bone.

Forbidden to see Jack by Cal and Ruth, Rose attempts to rebuff Jack's continuing advances.
She soon realizes, though, that she prefers him over Cal, and meets him at the bow of the ship during what turns out to be the Titanic's final moments of daylight.

They go to Rose's stateroom and she asks Jack to sketch her nude wearing the Heart of the Ocean---Cal's engagement present.

Yes, this is the fictional Romeo and Juliet story on the Titanic.

The same romance happened to me in Senday.

Are you kidding?

Oh, no, of cource not. I'm dead serious. In fact, I've already written the story in Japanese.

"Woman in Sendai (仙台の女)"

(December 18, 2011)

Kato, as I told you before, I cannot read Japanese. Besides, when I used the GOOGLE translator to read one of your stories, it tralslated the nitty-gritty of a tale into a confusing mass so that I couldn't understand the story at all.

Well,...in that case, I'd better tell you now.

Please do...I'm all ears.

It all started when I was a college boy. First of all, take a look at the memo Naoko gave me.

Cherry Blossoms in Sendai

Cheers for your hard work!
I'm grateful for the nude drawing you've made.

My classmates are always laughing at my pigeon tits and sticking-out buttocks.
I'm sort of bullied everyday.
Such being the cae, I was full of self-pity, remorse, and shame.
Inferiority complex engulfed me entirely.
I became like a ragged mass of misery.

Then, all of a sudden, you gave me a praising voice, drawing me in the nude.
What a lovely drawing!
It certainly pulled me up from the abyss of self-pity.
Oh, how I thank you?

The hot pants I wore on the day was a gift from my aunt who had bought them for me at Sachs on the Fifth Avenue.
I had been thinking that I would put them on for someone important.
Now, I'm glad to know that you liked those too.

Although I was a bit shameful while posing stark-naked in front of your eyes, I'm happy now because I have confidence in my own body image for the first time.
Your lovely drawing gave that confidence to me.
I've got a feeling that I'm now a full-fledged woman.
This feeling really makes me soar up in the sky.

However, I'm a little bit concerned about your praise.
Haven't you given me more praise than I deserve?
Whenever I think about it, I feel uneasy.

Can I be your "love in your heart"?
Some day, I might disappoint you.
Whenever I take a look at my inner self, I'm really worried about it.

Nevertheless, I am happy with the drawing you just made.
At least, I was all alone with you in the room while you were drawing me in the nude while cherry flowers were in full bloom outside.
I hope this new year will give you a lot of joy.

From Naoko with love

Kato, is this a thnak-you letter from the woman in Sendai?

Yes, it is.

Are you saying, you---like Jack Dawson in the movie---drew the Sendai woman in the nude?

Yes, I am.

Show me the drawing, will you?

Here it is.

So, you were an artist when you were a college student, weren't you?

You're telling me, Diane.

Did you draw many women in the nude?

Not quite many, but I took several drawing lessons. Actually, the above drawing was for somebody else.

Another girlfriend?

No, one of the models.

I see...she is beautiful. By the way, where is Titanic?

There is no Titanic. The movie title reminds me of the occasion in which I drew Naoko in the nude just as Jack drew Rose.

I see...how about a blue diamond?

A blue diamond?...well, there is no jewel involved in the case of Naoko. I would say, the hot pants might be the "Heart of the Ocean," though she wasn't wearing those while posing for me. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ... By the way, Diane, would you like to pose for me?

For nude drawing?

Yes, I'm pretty sure I would be able to make a lovely drawing since you're in such an enchanting shape.

Do you really want me to soar up in the sky as Naoko did?

Yes, I do.

No, thank you. I'm scared of heights. But I'd rather have a blue diamond as Rose did.

Oh, yes...you'll definitely have one called a "Heart of Love" while posing nude for me.

Don't be silly, Kato. I don't want any imaginary jewel.

【Himiko's Monologue】

Wow! ... Can you believe that?
Well, I might as well pose for a nude drawing.
I'd like to save my glorious youth that way as a memento for my older days.

If you're lucky enough, you might as well come across with an artist like Jack Dawson.

Come to think of it, I've never met a "Jack Dawson" in my life.
How come I'm always a loner?
I wish I could meet a nice artist at the library in my town as Diane met Kato.
Well, they say, there is a way where there is a will.

Have a nice day!
Bye bye ...

Hi, I'm June Adames.

I saw "Titanic" too.

It was a mind-boggling movie, especially amazing in the sinking scene.

I was totally engrossed in those astounding scenes.

Although half of the characters are fictional, some historical characters appear such as Margaret "Molly" Brown whom Kathy Bates plays in the movie.

Brown is looked down on upon by other first-class women, including Ruth, as "vulgar" and "new money" due to her sudden wealth.

She is friendly to Jack and lends him a dinner jacket (bought for her son) when he is invited to dinner in the first-class dining saloon.

Although Brown was a real person, Cameron chose not to portray her real-life actions.

Molly Brown was dubbed "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" by historians because she, with the support of other women, commandeered Lifeboat 6 from Quartermaster Hichens.

Some aspects of this altercation are portrayed in Cameron's film.

She is referred to as "Molly" within the film.

However, during her lifetime, she was called "Maggie," with the "Molly" appellation coming along posthumously.

Subj:Hi, Kato...

It's time we found you

a good girlfriend.

Hi Kato,
my truly romantic Taliesin!

How are things with you today?
I read the following article:

"Memory Lane to Sendai"

(December 8, 2011)

Thanks so much for this jazzy jazz and all this fascinating information.
You, indeed, are a veritable warehouse of information ... a mini-Google, so to speak! Thanks again.

Oh, my Goodness ... Superb! Amazing!
As you said, Oscar Peterson's performance is excellent!
Now, I love his piano even more than before.

It's party time before X'mas, isn't it?
Having a good time these days, lots of parties and plays and cocktails and dinners ... gotta love it.

It's been a long time since I've lived like this and am enjoying each day immensely.
I do miss going to the Joe Fortes library, though, and seeing you and the others.

The other evening, I enjoyed the Symphony, which was amazing, by the way.
Showing up on the stage was an imported saprano from Bulgaria, I suppose,
and a tenor who sounded as if he was from Italy but was actually a Canadian,
and the Bach Choir all conducted by the inimitable English conductor Bromwell Tovy.

Then, I ran into one of our fellow computer users, although I don't know her name.
She's a slim quiet sort of gal, attractive, in her late 40's I'd say.

She'd usually sit on the opposite side to where we sat, and it turns out one of her many jobs in life is as a greeter/seater at the Symphony.
She was happy to see me and told me she loves her job there and has recently moved to the east end.
So life changes for us all.

What's new with you?
Any new sweethearts on the scene?
It's time we found you a good girlfriend, I think.
It'll open your horizons even further.

See you soon, hopefully,

Love, Diane ~

Diane, I happened to come across with a mysterious, inspirational woman at the Joe Fortes Library.

No kidding!

I'm dead serious.

Kato, tell me about her.

I met her in last June.

You met her in last June?...You haven't told me about her at all since then, have you?

Well... no time for chit-chat about a one-night stand.

Oh, kato!...Did you really go all the way to the goal?

He, he, he, he, he, ... no, not to the bare skin...I'm just kidding. :)

Don't give me such a fib!

Oh no, I'm not giving you a fib. As a matter of fact, I met this mysterious, inspirational woman in the library, and indeed, I wrote an article about her at the time.

"Spider Web Castle"

(June 4, 2011)

Did you really write about her in the above article?

Yes, I did...but in Japanese. If you use the GOOGLE translator, you might be able to read it. Just click the above link and read it.

The other day, I used the translator, and read one of your articles, but couldn't understand the story at all.

Why not?

You see, Kato, the current translator is not perfect at all, although it's getting better. It seems to translate the nitty-gritty into a confusing mass when it touches the core of the story. I was simply confused when I read your article through the translator.

I know what you mean...well, in this case, I'll talk about her now.

Please do.

She was really inspirational, and quite fascinating in a sense.

By the way, Kato, are you saying, the woman you're talking about is the same woman I described in the above mail?

Oh, no, definitely not.

How come you're so sure about it.

'Cause the woman I met in the libarary is not in her 40s.

Then, she must be an attractive thirtyish woman. Is she not?

Oh, no...she is not definitely in that category.

What do you mean?

Well, as I said, she is quite a mysterious woman.

In what way?

Diane, have you ever viewed "Throne of Blood"---one of Kurosawa's best movies?

No, I don't think so.

Well, in that case, I'll jot down the story here.

Throne of Blood

Throne of Blood is a 1957 Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa.
Its original Japanese title is Kumonosu-jō (蜘蛛巣城), which means "Spider Web Castle."
The film transposes the plot of William Shakespeare's play Macbeth to feudal Japan.

Plot

Generals Miki and Washizu are Samurai commanders under a local lord, Lord Tsuzuki, who reigns in the castle of the Spider's Web Forest.
After defeating the lord's enemies in battle, they return to Tsuzuki's castle.
On their way through the forest surrounding the castle, they meet a spirit, who foretells their future.
The spirit tells them that today Washizu will be named master of the North Castle and Miki will now command Fort One.
She then foretells that Washizu will eventually become Lord of Forest Castle, and finally she tells Miki that his son will also become lord of the castle.

When the two return to Tsuzuki's estate, he rewards them with exactly what the spirit had predicted.
As Washizu discusses this with Asaji, his wife, she manipulates him into making the second part of the prophecy come true by killing Tsuzuki when he visits.

Washizu kills him with the help of his wife, who poisons the lord's guards.
When Washizu returns in shock at his deed, Asaji grabs the bloody spear and puts it in the hands of one of the three unconscious guards.
She then yells "murder" through the courtyard, and Washizu slays the guard before he has a chance to plead his innocence.

Tsuzuki's vengeful son Kunimaru and a rival of Washizu named Noriyasu both suspect Washizu as the murderous traitor and try to warn Miki, who refuses to believe what they are saying about his friend.
Washizu, though, is unsure of Miki's loyalty, but he wants to trust his friend and he still plans to let Miki's son be his heir, since he and Asaji have been unable to bear a child of their own.

Washizu plans to tell Miki and his son about his decision at a grand banquet, but Asaji tells him that she is pregnant, which leaves him with a quandary concerning his heir.
During the banquet Washizu drinks sake copiously because he is clearly agitated, and at the sudden appearance of Miki's ghost, begins losing control.
In his delusional panic, he reveals his betrayal to all by exclaiming that he is willing to slay Miki for a second time, going so far as unsheathing his sword and striking over Miki's mat.
Asaji, attempting to pick up the pieces of Washizu's blunder, tells the guests that he is drunk and that they must retire for the evening.
Then one of his men arrive with the severed head of Miki.
The guard also tells them that Miki's son escaped.

Later, distraught upon hearing of his wife's miscarriage and in dire need of help with the impending battle with his foes, he returns to the forest to summon the spirit.
She tells him that he will not be defeated unless the very trees of Spider's Web forest rise against the castle.
Washizu believes this is impossible and is confident of his victory.
Washizu knows he must kill all his enemies, so he tells his troops of the last prophecy, and they share his confidence.

He then finds Asaji in a semi-catatonic state, trying to wash clean the imaginary foul stench of blood from her hands, obviously distraught at her grave misdeeds. Distracted by the sound of his troops moving outside the room, he investigates and is told by a panicked soldier that the trees of Spider's Web forest "have risen to attack us." The prophecy has come true and Washizu is doomed.

As Washizu tries to get his troops to attack, they remain still.
Finally they turn on their master and begin firing arrows at him as revenge for his traitorous actions.
Washizu finally succumbs to his wounds just as his enemies approach the castle gates.
It is revealed that the attacking force is using trees cut down during the previous night to disguise and protect themselves in their advance on the castle.

Wow! ... The film transposes the plot of William Shakespeare's play Macbeth into feudal Japan, doesn't it?

Yes, it has been done superbly. I really loved the movie.

Kato, are you saying that the woman you met in the library has something to do with the above movie?

Yes, of course. I was viewing the DVD at the offline computer in the libarary when she came over and said, "Oh,...it's a Kurosawa movie, isn't it!...Kumonosu-jo...Yes, that's it!...I've seen it twice!... Oh, it's such a wonderful and exciting movie!”

Did she really say that to you, Kato?

Oh, yes, she did.

Is she a Japanese?

Oh no, she is not. She is not even a Chinese nor a Korean. She is a genuine Canadian woman who was born and educated here in Canada.

How do you know that?

'Cause she hasn't got any foreign accent in her speaking English.

How about her looks?

I haven't seen her face at all.

No kidding!

I was so engrossed and concentrated in the movie that I could't take off my eyes from the movie...I could't have even set my eyes on a naked woman at the time. He, he, he, he, he, ...

What scene were you watching at the time?

The climax scene, of course, in which, as Washizu tries to get his troops to attack, his soldiers remain still, and suddenly they turn on Washizu, their master, and begin firing arrows at him as revenge for his traitorous actions.

Finally, the fatal arrow splashes through his neck. I was indeed engrossed as if I were one of his soldieres who fired arrows at him.

Did the film get you fascinated that much?

Yes, of course, it did...you're telling me, Diane. You should borrow and view the DVD yourself. It is in the Joe Fortes Library or at the main branch.

I'll go get one. But, Kato, even if you were concentrated that much in the film, you had certainly some time to set an eye on her, didn't you?

No, not a bit---you believe or not---I was really engrossed in the fascinating string of scenes.

Then, what did she do after being ignored by you?

Apparently she came to know how much I was carried away in the movie. When the movie finished, nobody was around.

So you didn't see her face at all, did you?

No, not a bit. But for some rason, in my mind she appeared like the woman in the movie.

Are you saying, Kato, she was like the spirit living in the forest surrounding the castle?

Yes, that was my impression. She was talking to me as if the spirit had come out of the movie.

So, Kato, you were day-dreaming, weren't you?

Don't be silly, Diane. I have never sleep-walked in my life, let alone day-dreaming like that.

So, that's the end of your story, isn't it?

No, that's not the end. Three weeks ago, the mysterious and inspirational woman began to appear at the same computer table where I worked in the library.

But how do you know that she was the same woman you happened to meet in last June? You haven't seen her face, have you?

No, I haven't, but I knew it by my gut feeling. Since then, she has appeared whenever I start working on the computer.

At the same time?---same place? And every day?

You're telling me, Diane.

No kidding!---Kato, you must be day-dreaming!

No, definitely not!

Can I see her?

Yes, of course, you can---she is not a spirit---in fact she is a woman with warm blood and white skin.

What does she look like?

As I told you, you would get an impression of the spirit in the forest.

Does she actually appear like the woman in the above picture?

Oh no, of course not, she doesn't wear a white kimono like the above spirit. But you will know for sure which one of the women at the computer table when you look around.

So, she looks mysterious, doesn't she? But how mysterious?

She always puts a DVD into the drive, then sits down quietly at the computer with a pair of earphone pieces on her ears. She must be a cinema-maniac.

Why?

She seldom touches the keyboard. Apparently, she views movies in the DVD, and soon afterwards she starts to nod peacefully and happily as if she was listening to the mesmerizing lullaby. So I call her "Auntie Sleepie."

Kato, are you serious about all this?

Yes, of course, I am. Next time you come to the Joe Fortes Library, Diane, you will know for sure I've told you the real story. Auntie Sleepie is in the libray and waiting for you. He, he, he, he, he, ...

【Himiko's Monologue】

Wow! ... Can you believe that?
Well, if you happen to be in Vancouver, please drop in at Joe Fortes Library.
If you're lucky enough, you should be able to see a spirit in the forest of "Spider Web Castle."

Come to think of it, I've never met a male spirit in my life.
How come I'm always a loner?
I wish I could meet a nice "spirit" at the library in my town as Diane met Kato.
Well, they say, there is a way where there is a will.

Hi, I'm June Adames.

"Throne of Blood" is a really exciting movie, isn't it?

Specifically, Washizu's agonizing death is one of the most famous death scenes, in which his own archers turn upon him and fill his body with arrows.

This scene was in fact performed with real arrows, a choice made to help Mifune produce realistic facial expressions of fear.

The arrows seen to impact the wooden walls were not superimposed or faked by special effects, but instead shot by choreographed archers.

During filming, Mifune waved his arms, ostensibly because his character was trying to brush away the arrows embedded in the planks.

This indicated to the archers the direction in which Mifune wanted to move.

Hi Kato,
It was good to see you at your normal "work" station at Joe Fortes Library yesterday,

and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Although you're worried about my catching a bad cold, I'm quite fine this winter.

Yes, last winter, I broke my voice due to a bad cold, but my voice shall sound like that of an enchanting siren as you hope. :)

No cold here, kiddo ... thank God!
...enjoying this lovely (yet cool) weather actually and I hope you are, too.

I read your article:

"Wright and Japan"

(November 30, 2011)

Thanks so much, Kato Akira Kaato.
It's a really cool name! :)
The above article is fascinating as usual.

... hope you're enjoying this glorious sunny day.
I gotta run; one of my friends has an extra ticket to the Symphony this evening (Brahms, I believe) so is taking me along. Lucky me.

By the way, the following 12-minute clip will take you back quite a few years down the memory lane.
Enjoy it!

Love, Diane ~

Kato, did you enjoy the reminiscent songs of Engelbert Humperdinck?

Oh yes, I did indeed. Those songs remind me of Sendai---my second hometown.

Where is Sendai?

In Japan.

I know...but what part of Japan?

I'll show you the place in the following map:

Oh my Goodness!...your second home town is so near the nuclear disaster in Fukushima...It must have been contaminated by the radiation of the nuclear plant.

Yes...some people in the city are quite worried about the contamination.

I wonder if some of your relatives still live over there.

Fortunately, none of my relatives live in Sendai. All my family and relatives live near Tokyo, but some of them believe that the contamination has spread over Tokyo by now.

Really?

In fact, the people who live in and around Tokyo are quite agitated by the news of the contamination.

I could understand that. But tell me, Kato, how come the songs of Engelbert Humperdinck remind you of Sendai.

'Cause I enjoyed the most of those songs in Sendai when I was a college student over there. Besides, I enjoyed the Jazz Festival in Sendai while I stayed in Japan.

The 21st Jazz Festival

in Sendai

(September 10 & 11, 2011)

Is this jazz festival famous?

You bet on that, Diane. More than 700 bands took part in the festival, including more than 5、000 amateur and professional musicians. A hundred open-air stages were set up all over the city. More than 750,000 music fans attended the two-day festival. These days, even famous musicians from New York and Paris take part in the festival.

Like who?

Well...one of them is Makoto Ozone.

Makoto Ozone

Makoto Ozone (小曽根真) was born on March 25, 1961 in Kobe.
He is a Japanese jazz pianist.

He began playing organ at two and by seven was an improviser.
He appeared on Japanese television with his father from 1968 to 1970.

At twelve he switched to piano after being impressed by albums by Oscar Peterson.
In 1980 he entered the Berklee College of Music in Boston and graduated as the top of his class.
Later he worked with Gary Burton.
He also had his debut in 1983 before returning to his native Japan.

Ozone has collaborated with vocalist Kimiko Itoh.
They appeared as a duo at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and he produced her album Kimiko, which won the 2000 Swing Journal jazz disk grand prix for Japanese vocalist.

He lives in Japan, doesn't he?

Yes, but his activies are centered around New York.

I see...and what did he do in the festival?

He formed an impromptu jazz band from participants, arranged "Sukiyaki" into Jazz, and played it.

Is the pianist Ozone?

Oh no, the pianist in the clip is NOT Ozone 'cause I couldn't get the clip of the actual performance. But the sukiyaki song was genuinely arranged into jazz. The audience loved the performance, so Ozone and the band played "Take The 'A' Train" for encore.

Duke Ellington playd it, didn't he?

Yes, he did. It's his theme music.

Did he also take part in the festival?

No, of course not. Duke Ellington died in 1974. He's been long dead since.

Kato, are you an Ozone fan?

No, I'm not an enthusiastic fan. I didn't even know his name.

What makes you get interested in him?

'Cause I learned that at twelve Ozone switched to piano after being impressed by albums by Oscar Peterson. I'm an Oscar Peterson fan. Actually, while I lived in Toronto, I enjoyed his live performances at CNE (Canadian National Exhibition).

I like him, too.

I thought you didn't like jazz.

What makes you think so?

'Cause the other day you gave me a Miles Davis CD, and said, "I'm not much of a jazz fan."

Oh,... did I say that? but I like Oscar's piano very much.

Do you? Then you should listen to this:

Oh, my Goodness ... Superb! Amazing! Now, I love his piano even more than before.

I knew ... I expeted you would say that ... He, he, he, he, he, ...

【Himiko's Monologue】

Wow! ... What an impressive performance!
I'm not much of a jazz fan myself, but I like Oscar Peterson, too.
How about you?

Come to think of it, I've never met a "Oscar Peterson"---a music-loving decent man in my life.
How come I'm always a loner?
I wish I could meet a nice gentleman at the library in my town as Diane met Kato.
Well, they say, there is a way where there is a will.

Have a nice day!
Bye bye ...

Hi, I'm June Adames.

Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer.

He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington.

He released over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, and received other numerous awards and honours over the course of his career.

He is considered to have been one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, having played thousands of live concerts to audiences worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

He was born in 1925 to immigrants from the West Indies.

His father worked as a porter for Canadian Pacific Railway.

Peterson grew up in the neighbourhood of Little Burgundy in Montreal, Quebec.

It was in this predominantly black neighbourhood that he found himself surrounded by the jazz culture that flourished in the early 20th century.

At the age of five, Peterson began honing his skills with the trumpet and piano.

However, a bout of tuberculosis at age seven prevented him from playing the trumpet again, and so he directed all his attention to the piano.

As a child, Peterson also studied with Hungarian-born pianist Paul de Marky, a student of István Thomán, who was himself a pupil of Franz Liszt, so his training was predominantly based on classical piano.

Meanwhile he was captivated by traditional jazz and learned several ragtime pieces and especially the boogie-woogie.

At age nine Peterson played piano with control that impressed professional musicians.

For many years his piano studies included four to six hours of practice daily.

Only in his later years did he decrease his daily practice to just one or two hours.

In 1940, at age fourteen, Peterson won the national music competition organized by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

After that victory, he dropped out of school and became a professional pianist working for a weekly radio show, and playing at hotels and music halls.

Peterson lived in a two-storey house on Hammond Road in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, until his death in 2007 of kidney failure.
